Assessing your house for hazardous materials
If your house was constructed before 1980, there is a very good chance that it contains asbestos in some format. This material was widely used because of its fire resistant qualities as well as a fiber in plaster, mastic, joint compounds, an insulator in electrical wire sheaths, Insulation in hydronic heating systems and boilers, and so many other things!
When left untouched there is only a minimal hazard to your health, however once disturbed, the fibers can become airborne and friable. This is not something to take lightly as it is a highly carcinogenic material. We strongly recommend a professional abatement company to remediate the asbestos if it is present in your house.
Why do so many people renovate blindly
- Often contractors do not take health and safety seriously, causing endangerment to you.
- Issues like mold and asbestos downplayed.
- Pressure and lack of transparency from your contractor.
- Lower costs = Health and safety an afterthought.
